The II Conference on the Convent of Christ, Monastic Equipment and Spiritual Practice, aims at bringing together the researchers interested in (re)thinking the space once inhabited by monastic communities, as well as the tools and strategies applied to each one of the spatial units that make the monastery a whole. One of the ruling guidelines of this meeting will be the discussion regarding the models applied by religious orders in pursuance of the formulation of their own spatial strategies, as well as the supposed identity of their options. Additionally, we aim to promote reflection upon the seemingly stable nature of the objects planned to integrate and activate each monastic space. The proposals and the debates are welcome to approach specifically but not exclusively the case of the Convent of Christ and the military orders.
The effectiveness and functionality of space, form, and the the circulation strategies themselves defined by numerous religious orders depends hugely on the choices made for their furnishings, fittings, and main cellular entities, such as the church, the sacristy, the cloister or the monastic enclosure. Their features and organization may concur to a peculiar and whole integration of the monastic space or, on the contrary, may establish alternative dynamics that pervert the usual sense of spatiality and install undesired tensions. Space thus becomes an operative tool (and a decisive equipment) in the creation of a forged image. Furthermore the objects that dialogue with space share its nature and features, while simultaneously establishing their own identity, far beyond the uniform sense of the whole. In this sense, the monastic space is both a stage of harmony and conflict.
The relationship between power and its (thought and built) structures, extended to the tensions between the spiritual and the secular, materializing both in space as well as equipment.
The II CCC (Conference on the Convent of Christ) is organized respecting three main themes:
I – The Devotional Space
Church and liturgy: space and its reciprocity with liturgical objects
II – Ordination, Rule and Space
Monastic spaces and their relation with the obedience to the Rule; circulation and efficacy in the fruition of space.
III – Daily Life and Privacy
The infirmary, the dormitory or the enclosure: health, rest, and leisure.
Please send abstracts of no more than 400 words (20 min. presentation) and a short biographical note (300 words) to [email protected] no later than July 7, 2017. Abstracts and papers may be presented in Portuguese, Spanish, English and French.
All participants will be notified by the end of July, with the immediate communication of the provisional programme.

I – O Espaço Devocional
III – Quotidiano e Reserva
